April

And the town paper
boasts signs
of spring:
"Garden supplies in the grainery!"
"Strawberry plants available in Grayston!"
A farm
has its own
spring miracles
to attend to in the semi-solitude
of the barn:
a mother cow
and her calf
dip their heads
into the sunrise
lambs stumble
across
their field
the chicken's
first egg hatches
a small
fluff,
which tries to look everywhere
at once
from a little world
of shell
at its feet
unnoticed by the paper on this day
where
spring
is born
into each
animal.
