Miracle

“No!” With that one word, the old
woman, aged 75, frail, on her
last legs, though hers don’t work
anymore, refuses medication.
She tells them she does not need it.
They stare in shock at her defiance.
She has rebelled against
the very thing that keeps her alive.
“It’s time,” she says, tears
of joy tumbling from her eyes that
could once see so well, but now
can barely distinguish the doctors
that work hard for her from
a burglar. She grips the sides of her
wheelchair. The doctors, nurses,
everyone in the room gawk in disbelief.
The old woman, who for so many
years has not been even able to
stand, with that one motion refuses
to believe that she can’t.
