The Girl Sitting Next to Me

My childhood appeared next to me
in the form of dirty white sneakers
embellished with faded pink borders,
bringing me back to the time
my legs hung, swinging
and I sat
sneaking looks at the "big girl" next to me,
enamored by the way
she looked at me and smiled.
Now my fingers run
along the ridges in the chair too,
my tired eyes losing their focus,
instead of looking at that girl next to me.
