Orchestra, 6th Period

A room filled with cages
holding instruments, violins,
viola, bass.
A variety of sleeping
instruments.

One instrument seems
to glow above the rest,
cello.

Just a quick pluck, please?
There is no resisting.

I pluck a string.
A sound, like a bass guitar
vibrates in the room,
only audible to me
because of the cheerful
clutter of 25 other
instruments.

I go a step farther.
Before I know it, my cello
is in my lap, bow poised,
ready on the string.

Then I dive into a piece,
25 kids plus teacher
recognize it as Beethoven's Fifth
Symphony. I play again,
anything to keep my audience
captivated. My fingers
moving briskly, I repeat
the piece until my
fingers blister.
